As our life in Lockdown begins to shift and change again, it is likely that new emotions, new feelings of fear and worry, as well as elation and excitement start to flood our consciousness. For some, this could be an overwhelming time.
It was the very fact that some rules around Lockdown have lifted that enabled me to enjoy a beautiful evening at the Acorn Retreat (https://www.acornwellness.co.uk/) for a Gong bath with one of life's most beautiful souls Jules Cooper from Dragon Fly Yoga ( http://dragonflyyoga.co.uk/) and she reminded me of one of the poems that helped me in my times of darkness, depression and insomnia - The Guest House by Rumi.
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
As an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still treat each...
In a previous life, I think I must have been a cat. Or maybe a giant armadillo! Did you know they sleep around 18 hours a day! To me that sounds like bliss! I love sleep. Especially in the winter, I love to hibernate. If only I could live by the day light hours!
However, in the way we live our lives today, that just isn’t possible. There is work, endless responsibilities and the latest Netflix release to watch. As work life balance and boundaries blur in to one, sleep becomes over-rated with phrases such as ‘I’ll sleep when I’m dead’! Some of us even wear our lack of sleep as a badge of honour, with workaholism causing a lack of sleep. Some fear getting the proper sleep also equates to not being passionate enough about the work we do and the life we lead.
And yet sleep is vital for our overall physical heath as our body rests and more importantly for our mental health....
Clare and I first met 3 years ago as part of a life coaching group and remained 'friends' on social media. At the beginning of this year, Clare contacted me while she was at a very low point in her life and asked for help. This has been tough journey for Clare, but I had the privilege to watch someone face into their darkest moments with dignity. I love how Clare describes that she now wakes up each morning delighted to see what the day may bring.
