The Emotional Guest House

As our life in Lockdown begins to shift and change again, it is likely that new emotions, new feelings of fear and worry, as well as elation and excitement start to flood our consciousness.  For some, this could be an overwhelming time.

 

It was the very fact that some rules around Lockdown have lifted that enabled me to enjoy a beautiful evening at the Acorn Retreat (https://www.acornwellness.co.uk/) for a Gong bath with one of life's most beautiful souls Jules Cooper from Dragon Fly Yoga ( http://dragonflyyoga.co.uk/) and she reminded me of one of the poems that helped me in my times of darkness, depression and insomnia - The Guest House by Rumi.

Ali: From feeling low and in a mess, to feeling positive and in control

During one of the first sessions that Ali came to see me, my house alarm had a fault and wouldn't stop going off!  Rather than stress about it, we took a stroll into the garden and sat in the sunshine on the terrace.  In some ways, this set the tone for the transition Ali went through - from loud upsetting noise, to finding peace and calm.

Here is Ali's story in her words: 

 

I was very low after the death of my mum and my marriage breakdown 6 weeks after she died. I was struggling with running my business, looking after my daughter and adjusting to being a single parent. I had money troubles and I couldn't see how I could get myself out of this mess I found myself in.

Joe: The effect of diet on teenage ADHD

I have recently been privileged enough to be able to help teenagers understand the impact of their diet on their mental health; how high sugary treats and foods can lead to blood sugar highs and then the inevitable lows. This can exacerbate any anxious tendencies they may already have and therefore, guiding and suggesting alternatives that they enjoy can have wonderful effects.

Joe is 14 years old and was diagnosed with moderate combined ADHD at the age of 13. Andy: Raising awareness on the importance of men's mental health

Andy approached me after I had shared a talk at work on Mindfulness and how it can create harmony in the workplace.  He had been through an intense few months personally and professional and reached out for support.  Andy wanted to publicly share his testimonial for the men reading this, because he feels men typically don’t find it that easy or comfortable to talk about thoughts or feelings and hoped by sharing his experience that it might inspire others to take action if they feel they need support, in whatever guise.

My top three goals upon starting the 6-month program were spending more quality time with family, especially my parents.  Getting into regular exercise and eating healthily and getting back into dating after a break up 6 months prior.
